New Tunes Tuesday – Week 6 – Flyleaf, Arise

| |

Week 6 sees New Tunes Tuesday move to the rock side – a bit. I’m a sucker for (rock but in general) music with female vocalists (think, Evanescence, Paramore, Nightwish). So when I stumbled across Flyleaf, they got stuck on repeat for a while. I could have picked 4 or 5 songs from their album “Memento Mori“, so narrowing it down to one was difficult!

Flyleaf, Arise

This song brings back some really good memories for me – it was on my radar back in an era when I was really enjoying life (not that I don’t know, of course, but there have been highs and low, and this whole album is one from a good time, so why not embrace those memories!?). I think it was fresh out of Uni, new job, new city, new friends. Young, free, money to spare in the pocket, you know the drill.

Anyway, enough of that, here we go:

Arise, for me, is just such a powerful song, and even now, the lyrics seem incredibly relevant to the struggles we face at these times:

Hold on to the world we all remember fighting for,

There’s still strength left in us yet

Arise and be,
All the you dreamed, all that you dreamed

Flyleaf have some incredible songs on this album – one of which, “Again“, I could / did / often do listen to on repeat to this day – just stunning. “Again” has become one of my go-to motivation songs, when I’m on the exercise bike, it’ll encourage me to up the pace and push myself harder. I can’t pinpoint why, but it works, so that’s enough for me!

They also have an acoustic song, “Cassie”, which is about the Columbine High School shootings back in 1999 – where 13 people were killed – one of which, Cassie Bernall, was asked a question by the gunman; the answer to which cost her her life:

Do you believe in god?

Cassie answered “Yes”.

I’ve written about this elsewhere, so if you wanted to read it, check it out here. You can hear the song “Cassie” by clicking here

The band are (currently) in hiatus, 4 years and counting. The lead singer from when this track was released, Lacey Sturm, left back in 2012, so don’t be looking for any recent material!

If you’re a fan of Flyleaf now, why not check out bands / artists such as Seether, Evanescence and Nightwish
