Not going to uni, and why it’s OK.

Mark recently wrote a few posts about his experience at uni, and I thought I’d do my take on not going to uni and what I did.

Around this time 6 years ago, I found out I hadn’t gotten into the university I’d chosen. I was in Magaluf at the the time, and my mum had gotten my results for me. I was stood on the balcony as the sun was going down and my mum, bless her heart went “well, are they good grades?” and I just burst into tears.

I felt like such a failure at that time, and the idea of going through clearing made me feel even worse. I remember being so scared, because I’d planned on going to university for years, and suddenly that was gone.

When I got home I started looking at college courses that interested me, or jobs that I might be good at, and nothing was jumping out. I eventually moved on to apprenticeship, thinking that maybe there would be something there for me, I even nearly applied to be an apprentice donut maker.

I eventually settled on business administration, because I like organising and sorting things, so I thought why the hell not. It ended up taking me on a hell of journey, and although on that balcony in Magaluf 6 years ago I was scared shitless-  it’s brought me to where I am now, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

However, don’t take this post as me saying you shouldn’t go into clearing because there’s NOTHING wrong with it. I just knew it wasn’t for me. If you don’t get into your university of choice, and you don’t want to go into clearing, please know it isn’t the end of the world, there are other options and sometimes these options are even better for you and your life.
